Abortion Rights Hit Hard as Wyoming Approves Controversial 6-Week Ban

In 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, allowing states to enforce abortion bans. 13 states banned abortion entirely. Wyoming’s only clinic was set on fire that year, delaying its opening.

In January, the Wyoming Supreme Court struck down a statewide abortion ban. The decision reset the legal situation, but the issue stayed heated as lawmakers prepared a narrower restriction.

Gov. Mark Gordon signed a ban on abortions after cardiac activity, usually around 6 weeks, often before pregnancy is known. Wyoming became the 5th state with this restriction.

In a letter to lawmakers, Gordon shared concerns about the law. He opposed missing exceptions for rape and incest, cited risks to vulnerable populations, and warned of new court battles.

Julie Burkhart, head of Wellspring Health Access, vowed a court challenge, calling the ban unconstitutional. Staff referred patients out of state. The clinic, burned in 2022, recorded 303 abortions in 2025.

Since the 2022 ruling, abortion laws remain unstable nationwide. Wyoming joins 17 states restricting access. With legal fights coming and patients traveling away, the future of reproductive rights remains uncertain.
