Mamdani Flatters Trump With Tabloid Gift in Oval Office

In November, newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani met President Trump in the Oval Office. The meeting turned unexpectedly friendly as Trump praised him and patted his arm, forming an unlikely bond between a MAGA leader and a democratic socialist.

Earlier that week, Mamdani’s advisers planned the idea. They designed Daily News front-page mock-ups, copied the famous 1975 “Ford” headline style, and by Wednesday night finalized and printed the version on simple printer paper.

Two mock front pages told the message: the 1975 “Ford to City: Drop Dead” beside a new version, “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” The design echoed history while flattering a president whose name appears on New York skyscrapers.

On Thursday, Mamdani traveled to Washington carrying the two printed mock-ups in a folder. Trump had invited him back in November with orders to return with a bold pitch. The mayor arrived ready to appeal to Trump’s interests.

Late in the meeting, Mamdani presented both printouts. President Trump, once a regular tabloid figure, proudly held up “Trump to City: Let’s Build,” smiling widely, while Mamdani stood nearby with a quiet, satisfied expression.

The Oval Office photo, bright and surreal, spread across social media. While Mamdani still faces challenges gaining White House support to build housing in New York City, both leaders found common ground in the lasting power of tabloids.
