Trump’s Iran War Turns Ally Into Liability as Italy’s Meloni Faces Political Backlash

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, called “Europe’s Trump Whisperer,” built a close alliance with Donald Trump. They shared views on migration and anti-woke politics, boosting Italy’s influence as Meloni frequently visited Mar-a-Lago and the White House.

Trump’s Iran war shocked Europe after a suspected U.S. strike hit an Iranian school, killing at least 175 people, mostly children. Italy received no warning, leaving Defense Minister Crosetto stranded in Dubai as regional airspace suddenly shut down.

Inside Italy’s Senate, opposition senator Carlo Calenda attacked Meloni’s ties with Trump, blaming him for Middle East destruction. Meloni surprised lawmakers, saying Calenda’s criticism of President Trump was not exaggerated, shocking the entire chamber.

Meloni condemned the Iranian school strike as a “massacre”, demanding accountability. She warned against unilateral military actions outside international law and said the conflict threatened the global order, exposing the fragile balance in her relationship with Trump.

Across Europe, Trump’s allies began distancing themselves. Germany’s AfD leader Chrupalla warned Trump would be remembered for war. Slovakia’s Fico spoke of global collapse, while Hungary’s Orban claimed he advised Trump against the conflict.

In Italy, Trump’s approval fell to 77% unfavorable as gas prices surged. Opposition leader Elly Schlein blamed Meloni’s friendship with Trump, arguing it failed to protect Italy, turning the once valuable alliance into a political burden.
