The Guardian That Couldn’t Protect Its Iranian Guest

In Oct 2025, PM Narendra Modi addressed naval forces in India wearing a navy uniform and sunglasses. He declared the navy the “guardian of Indian Ocean”, as officers proudly chanted patriotic slogans.

During the Milan exercise at Visakhapatnam, Iranian warship IRIS Dena arrived as India’s guest. President Droupadi Murmu met sailors. Both navies held parades, took selfies, and shared friendly moments during the 2-week event.

On Mar 4, 2026, returning from India’s exercise, IRIS Dena was torpedoed by a US submarine in international waters, 44 nautical miles off Sri Lanka. US official Pete Hegseth called it a “quiet death.”

The Sri Lankan Navy led rescue efforts near Galle, recovering 80+ bodies and saving 32 survivors, including the commander. 100+ crew were missing. Injured sailors were taken to Galle National Hospital under tight security.

India took 24+ hours to respond. Iran said IRIS Dena was “a guest of India’s navy.” Analysts questioned if India was unaware or informed. Admiral Prakash said both possibilities hurt India’s credibility.

India’s silence faced criticism. Days earlier, Modi visited Israel and hugged Netanyahu. India sent only an official to Iran’s condolence meet. Analysts called it “strategic embarrassment,” saying ocean credibility was damaged.
