Russian Military Plane Crashes Into Cliff In Crimea Killing All 29 People On Board

On April 1, a Russian An-26 military transport plane crashed into a cliff in Crimea, killing all 29 people on board. Russia’s defence ministry confirmed the catastrophe, citing a possible technical malfunction.

Communication with the aircraft was lost at about 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday during a planned flight over Crimea — the peninsula annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, surrounded by sweeping Black Sea mountains.

Search teams located the crash site. TASS reported 6 crew members and 23 passengers were killed. The ministry made no mention of any survivors — a grim confirmation of total loss.

The defence ministry confirmed there was no external impact on the aircraft — ruling out missiles, drones, and birds. The preliminary cause was identified as a technical malfunction inside the plane.

The An-26 has been in service since the late 1960s — a light tactical transport capable of carrying cargo and up to 40 passengers. But the aging model has a deadly crash history.

The An-26 has been involved in multiple deadly crashes — Ukraine in 2022 and 2020, South Sudan in 2020 killing 8, and Ivory Coast in 2017 killing 4. The pattern of disasters continues.
