Former FBI Director James Comey Faces Federal Charges Over a Seashell Photo No One Took Seriously

In 2024, former FBI Director James Comey posted a beach photo — seashells arranged to read “86 47.” He claimed it was political commentary, not a threat. Once backlash grew, he immediately deleted it.

On Tuesday, the Justice Department indicted Comey in North Carolina, arguing a reasonable person would read the seashell post as “a serious expression of intent to harm the President.” The charge was unprecedented.

Comey made a brief court appearance on Wednesday. Hours later, he posted a defiant Substack video — “I am still innocent. I am still not afraid. I still believe in the independent federal judiciary.”

Vast empty federal courtroom viewed from the gallery; the judge’s bench, vacant prosecutor’s table, and frozen journalists convey a sudden abandonment of proceedings.

This was not the first strike. The DOJ had previously indicted Comey for lying to Congress — but a federal judge dismissed the case entirely, ruling that the appointed prosecutor had no legal authority to serve.

The feud traces back to 2017, when Trump fired Comey mid-investigation into alleged Russian ties. For years, Trump allies demanded punishment. By September, Trump was publicly pressuring AG Pam Bondi over the lack of indictments.

After Trump fired Bondi, acting AG Todd Blanche immediately revived the Comey case. Legal experts, however, warned the charge was fragile — the seashell post was widely viewed as protected political expression, not a credible threat.
