Only 27% Back US Strikes on Iran, Nation Divided

US strikes on Iran began Saturday, killing Iran’s leader. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found about 90% of Americans had heard about the attacks. The poll ended Sunday with 1,282 adults and a 3-point margin.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll showed only 27% approved of the US strikes, while 43% disapproved and 29% were unsure. The results showed strong public opposition to the military action taken Saturday.

About 56% of Americans said Trump was too willing to use military force — including 87% Democrats, 60% independents, and 23% Republicans. Recent strikes in Venezuela, Syria, and Nigeria increased concerns about aggressive actions abroad.

While 55% Republicans approved the strikes, 42% said they would withdraw support if US troops were killed or injured. Already, 3 service members had died and 5 were seriously wounded in the operation.

Trump’s approval rating fell to 39%, down from 40% in the last poll. The Iran strikes began 3 days before midterm primaries. Voters said their top concern remained the economy, not foreign policy.

Around 45% of respondents, including 34% Republicans and 44% independents, said rising gas prices would reduce support for the Iran campaign. Brent crude jumped 10% to $80, with forecasts near $100.
